Des peintures rupestres datant de dizaines de milliers d'ann\u00e9es utilisaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 des mat\u00e9riaux naturels tels que le charbon de bois, l'ocre, le brun de mangan\u00e8se et le kaolin. Vers 2000 avant notre \u00e8re, les hommes ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 cuire des minerais naturels m\u00e9lang\u00e9s \u00e0 du minerai de mangan\u00e8se pour produire des teintes rouges, violettes et noires pour la poterie. L'orpiment et l'orpimentite comptent parmi les premiers pigments jaunes vifs, tandis que l'outremer et le bleu \u00e9gyptien repr\u00e9sentent les premi\u00e8res teintes bleues. La Renaissance a apport\u00e9 de nouveaux d\u00e9veloppements, tels que l'introduction du carmin du Mexique en Europe, suivie de l'apparition du bleu de cobalt et du verre bleu de cobalt. \u00c0 partir du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, des pigments produits industriellement comme le bleu de Prusse, le bleu de cobalt et le jaune de chrome sont apparus progressivement. Le 19e si\u00e8cle a vu le d\u00e9veloppement du vert de chrome, des pigments \u00e0 base d'oxyde de fer et de cadmium.
