What Is TPO?
TPO is a highly ubiquitous photoinitiator present in virtually all budget gel polishes sold both in drug stores and at cheap nail bars. The sole purpose of TPO is to accelerate the process of curing under LED/UV light in order to make the curing go faster. Despite being cheap and efficient enough, it has a severe drawback – high irritancy levels for the skin.
I have been seeing this effect happen time and again throughout the years of conducting lab experiments and working with my partner salons. Customers have inflamed cuticles upon leaving, manicure addicts suffer from irritated skin on their hands, and even professional nail technicians have allergic reactions due to their constant exposure to TPO.

4. Pro Tips: How to Apply & Remove TPO-Free Gel Polish Correctly
Application Steps (Ideal for Salon & Home)
- Completely prepare your nails: file, push back the cuticles, and remove all oils, dust, and moisture using a nail cleaner (clean nails are essential to avoid lifting).
- Put on a thin coat of a Rubber Base Coat that is irritant-free and then cure using the LED/UV light.
- Apply two thin coats of TPO-free color gel and thoroughly cure each one — applying thick coats of gel leaves uncured gel underneath which irritates your skin.
- Top off the manicure with a high-gloss top coat and then cure it.
- Lastly, finish your manicure by putting on some cuticle oil to keep the area moisturized.

- File gently on the top coat only, do not file too much on your natural nail plate.
- Cover each nail with an acetone-soaked cotton swab and wrap the nail in aluminum foil for 10 to 15 minutes (don’t rush on this process)
- Use a cuticle pusher to remove the soaked gel from the nails and never ever try to scrape them, this will damage your natural nails.
- Apply hand cream or cuticle oil after gel removal on nails.
Always remind your client that the most expensive gel won’t last or work unless she properly prepares and applies her nails.
